Models... Thanks. Email Rareclock@aol.com Bangor Electric Clock Company
Was incorporated in Bangor,
Maine October 13, 1897, President Joseph S. Smith, Treasure H. W. Blood and the “The Jewelers’ Circular” Nov. 3, 1897 wrote
“An adjourned meeting of the Bangor Electric Clock Co., Bangor Me., was held last Wednesday, and the certificate of incorporation
was accepted. The Company will build a factory in Bangor next spring for the manufacture of the clocks. During the winter,
it is reported, 1,000 clocks will be manufactured for them in Boston.”
On November 28 , 1900, “The Jewelers’ Circular-Weekly”
Reported “on Tuesday Dec 4, at 10:00 o’clock the factory, equipment, business, real estate, machinery, tools materials, fixtures
clocks, patents and office furniture of the Bangor Electric Clock. Bangor, ME. Will be sold at auction on the premises at
16 Salem Court. There are indications that The Bangor Clock Company may have been reestablished for a short period of time
but that can’t be verified.
This is a Bangor Clock Co. clock with movement patent # 648,487, May 1, 1900 and patented
by Walter J. Dudley of Somerville, Mass and then assigned to the Bangor Electric Clock Co, of Bangor, Maine. These clocks
are seldom seen using a movement which is quite complicated and impulses the pendulum with each beat. On the side of the movement
are two patent dates, Feb 24, 1891 and Dec. 22, 1891 which indicates to me that this movement was made prior to the May 1,
1900 date of patent # 648,487 even thou this movement has parts of the earlier patents. Please email me with any information
on this company you might have. Rareclock@aol.com

*(1) These clocks were manufactured
for a short period of time. Apparently they were not well accepted in the marketplace. The same basic clock, with some variations,
used Walter J. Dudley's patent of December 22, 1891.
The Bangor Electric Clock Company was incorporated in Maine in
October 1897 and ceased to do business in February 1903. The Company was reorganized in May 1901 as the National Electric
Clock Company and ceased to do business as of January 1903. In June 1905, the company again was in business but as the New
England Electric Clock Company which ceased business in 1909-10. These companies were at the same location in Bangor, with
basically the same officers and directors.
The clocks manufactured were mainly an office type wall clock with long
drop. Very few shelf clocks were made, and at least one tall case was made for the boardroom. However, the movements were
numbered and I have seen one as high as 243. These cases were beautifully made by a local lumber company, usually in mahogany
or cherry. I have seen clocks with painted dials, Bangor Electric Clock Company in block letters, and Bangor Electric Clock
Company in script on brass dials. These were wall clocks.
The clocks are not very common. I have seen four of the
wall clocks, but the prices have gotten high.
